WACTE Professional Opportunities

_______________________________________________

Dear WACTE Colleagues:

We are seeking to ensure that information about two positions in education we are seeking to fill is available to recent doctoral candidates or alumni at universities at our fellow WACTE institutions. I am requesting you to forward the attached announcement to those candidates or your faculty who work with those candidates.

At Saint Martin’s University, the three standbys of teaching, research, and service are important, with teaching most prominent.  In the Catholic, Benedictine tradition, we educate by recognizing the spiritual and ethical dimensions of all human activity and by celebrating the uniqueness and worth of each human being. Our goal is to provide a living and learning environment that prepares students for active, responsible, and productive lives in their professions and as members of the local and global community. We seek candidates who wish to teach in that environment.

Friends,

During my president’s report, I talked to you a bit about the “Day on the Hill” lobbying effort that AACTE sponsors.  It is a very good activity and I would strongly encourage any of you to attend!  Last year, I was the only person from the Northwest!

This flyer provides you information about the day.

WEST-E October and November Test Development Meetings

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) has recently initiated redevelopment of the WEST–E (Washington Educator Skills

Tests—Endorsements), the exams needed for K–12 educator endorsements. Evaluation Systems group of Pearson ("Pearson") is convening test development committees to review test materials for the new WEST-E tests in late October and late November 2007.  These activities include reviewing the test frameworks and test items.

We are currently looking for educators in the following fields: Bilingual Education, Biology, Chemistry, Dance, Deaf Education, Earth and Space Science, Elementary Education, English, Language Arts, English as A Second Language, Health/Fitness, History, Mathematics, Middle Level: Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Music: Choral, General, Instrumental, Physics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Theatre

Arts, and Visual Arts.

Committee members will receive substitute reimbursement for their school district, if they require one, be reimbursed for their travel and meal expenses, and be provided with hotel accommodations.  Educator involvement in test development also provides opportunities for professional growth and is paramount to maintaining the high quality of the education provided in K-12 schools.

We are requesting your assistance in identifying educators who may be interested in assisting in the development of these new exams.  Educators who would be interested in participating need to fill out an application for committee participation.   I have attached the link to the application for WEST-E test participation to this email.  Completed applications should be faxed back to 866-565-4877, Attn: Emily Moreau.

SUBJECT:  Funding Available for Future Teachers

We are pleased to announce that the Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program received additional funding from the Legislature for the current 2007-2008 academic year.  We request your assistance in publicizing this opportunity to interested personnel.  We hope to select about 100 applicants to receive awards.

The 2007-2008 program is available to Washington residents pursuing an initial teaching certificate or additional shortage subject endorsements.

The application form and program information are available on our website (www.hecb.wa.gov/teachers).

Selected participants receive conditional scholarships up to the value of tuition and fees charged students at the public colleges and universities.  The conditional scholarship is paid out as a loan which is forgiven in exchange for qualified teaching service in Washington public K-12 schools.  After completing their certificate or endorsement program, participants are obligated to a specific length of teaching service in exchange for their benefit, usually two years of teaching in exchange for one year of benefits.  Participants may not receive the Future Teachers award and the Alternative Routes conditional loan scholarship for the same academic year.

Selection priority is given to applicants who commit to teach math, science, or special education in Washington public K-12 schools.  Math or science must be taught at grade seven or higher; special education may be taught at any grade level.

For more information, please contact Mary Knutson at maryk@hecb.wa.gov or 360-753-7845 or Julie Japhet at juliej@hecb.wa.gov  or 360-753-7840.   If preferred, students may leave a message at 1-888-535-0747 (option 2).
